Shorebird Habitat Management and Restoration Fund

Keeping Texas Wild

TPWF is increasing the quality and quantity of habitat available for shorebirds on Texas’ public lands.

About the Program

Texas’ seemingly endless skies offer so much more than inspiring sunrises and sunsets. They serve as an avian superhighway for migrating shorebirds, waterfowl, warblers, and other winged wild things along the Central Flyway. Sadly, the healthy wetlands, prairies, and coastal ecosystems that have long fueled past voyages are dwindling or disappearing altogether, causing population declines for many species, including shorebirds.

While programs to support habitat management and restoration exist for private lands, there are limited funding opportunities for public lands. To help fill this gap, TPWF has launched the Shorebird Habitat Management and Restoration Fund (SHMRF) with generous funding from the Knobloch Family Foundation. This initiative aims to restore and enhance shorebird habitat on Texas’ public lands, recognizing the vital role Texas plays in global shorebird survival.

The fund offers targeted grants ranging from $5,000 to $30,000 per project, and eligible applicants include non-governmental organizations or government-sponsored partners working alongside city, county, state, or federal land managers. These grants will help public lands grow the number of acres in Texas that provide safe feeding, nesting, and migratory stopover sites for shorebirds.

SHMRF is poised to accelerate on-the-ground conservation at a time when migratory shorebirds need it most. By directing resources to public lands across the state, from the Gulf Coast to the Panhandle, this fund is more than a stopgap—it’s a long-term commitment to ensuring that shorebirds can continue to fly high and find refuge in Texas.
